Grayscale, sepia & invert — 100% local
How to make a black & white image (3 steps)
- Pick your image. Load any JPG, PNG or WebP — processing is 100% local.
- Shape the look. Keep "Black & White" at 100% for a classic monochrome, add 20–40% sepia for a vintage feel, or push invert for a negative effect. The preview updates live as you drag.
- Download. The result saves as a PNG at the original resolution — ready for print, social posts, or design work.
Why pixel-level conversion (not a CSS filter)
Many "black and white" web tools just apply a CSS filter for the preview and send your photo to a server for the real job. This converter does the math on every pixel locally: luminance weights (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B) for natural-looking grayscale, true sepia matrix colors, and per-pixel inversion. The downloaded file actually contains the effect — paste it anywhere and it stays black and white.
FAQ
- Why 0.299/0.587/0.114 weights? Those are the standard luma coefficients for human perception — our eyes see green most strongly, so a naive (R+G+B)/3 average looks washed out.
- Can I get a partial effect? Yes — 50% black & white gives a desaturated, faded look; 30% sepia is the classic "old photo" tone.
- Is my photo uploaded? No. Every pixel is processed by JavaScript running in your tab.
